About neurodiversity

‘Neurodiversity’ means that humans are all different in how we think, feel and learn. That’s because all our brains process information in different ways.


Some people are neurotypical. Neurotypical people are different from each other in all sorts of ways, but the way their brains process information is pretty similar.


Another group of people are not neurotypical. Their brains process information in different ways from neurotypical people.  They are also different from each other in lots of ways. They are neurodivergent.

Types of neurodivergence include autism, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), Tourette’s syndrome, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, language disorder, social communication disorder and more. Sometimes you can have a combination of a few of these. And sometimes you can have neurodivergent traits for other reasons.

Neurodiversity is important because it helps us find new solutions to problems. It also makes the world more creative, colourful and interesting. If everyone thought and acted in the same way, life would be very boring.

Many neurodivergent people are proud of the unique way that they think about the world. Many companies are especially keen on neurodivergent people joining their teams because of the talents they bring. People who are neurodivergent are often wonderful friends because they're not afraid to stand up for what's right and can be very honest, kind, funny and loyal.

I think I'm neurodivergent

You might feel that you are neurodivergent yourself in some way. You might not have a name for it, and you might not have a diagnosis. But maybe you just feel that your brain processes information a bit differently from other people. That’s perfectly ok.


At the moment, the world is more designed for people with neurotypical brains than people with neurodivergent brains. Why? Because it’s believed that there are more neurotypical people in the world. But lots of people are questioning that now. At least 20 out of every 100 people are neurodivergent – but we're sure there are more…


Figuring out what you need

If you’re neurodivergent, it can be difficult living in a word that’s not yet designed for the way your brain works. You might need a few different things to make things, places and activities suit you better. That’s why it’s important to figure out what support you need, and how to get it.


It's good to let people know what helps you. As you get older, you'll probably learn more and more about what helps you, and what doesn't. The more you know what helps you, the easier it will be to achieve the exciting things you dream about doing!


As you get older, you'll also get more confident about letting other people know what helps you. We're all different. So the things that help will be different for everyone.
